In my law practice, I have a surprising number of cases that involve parking lot motor vehicle accidents. I have also noticed that in the last 3 years, since I’ve been walking to work several times per week, which involves walking through various parking lots, that there are many hazards. What does this have to do with sports and recreation? If you are a facility owner or manager, you have probably figured this out. With every sports and recreation facility there are parking lots for patrons to park. The problem with gym and fitness facility lots is that people tend to leave valuables in their cars if they don’t leave them in their lockers. As a patron, it is hard to decide whether to risk a vehicle break in or a locker intrusion. At some facilities, there are signs posted in both the parking lot and the locker room that the management is not responsible for valuables stolen. What if the parking lot or parking structure is equally as sketchy as the locker room? What if you plan to go to the gym on your way home from work and you are toting your computer, cell phone, Kindle, wallet and jewelry? And, what if you drive a car that is a popular target of theft and break ins? Facility owners know that if they wish to increase their clientele that they should provide reasonable security in the parking lot. This might mean lighting at night, cameras and possible security personnel.
Parking lot accidents between vehicles can be diminished by the facility owner with some attention to design and markings. Vehicles should have room to move in and out of stalls and through the parking facility without concern of hitting objects. Poles and walls that are easily scraped should be painted with bright paint so they are more visible. Mirrors should be erected so that drivers can see around blind corners. Arrows should be painted and visible to show the direction of travel. Although your facility may be able to avoid being named as a defendant in parking lot incidents of theft or collision, a safe parking lot can positively impact your bottom line.

I totally agree when you said that property owner should look for ways to increase their security as much as possible if they want to have more clients. I think one of the best ways to do that is to have ample parking lot lighting, especially when they are a 24/7 establishment. This will reduce the instances of theft or robbery while their clients are going in and out of their cars, in my opinion.
